“Junior College” (JUCO), popularmente conocido como “Community College” es una de las opciones que ofrece el sistema educativo estadounidense posterior a culminar la etapa de educación secundaria (High School). Se pueden entender como instituciones que imparten programas educativos de dos años centrados en la preparación técnica/vocacional. Si bien, estas instituciones no son de paso obligatorio para cada estudiante que finaliza el colegio, son una opción para quienes por razones, académicas, deportivas o económicas no pudieron ingresar directamente a la universidad.
En cuanto a la parte deportiva, en caso de que un estudiante atleta no haya podido ingresar directamente a una institución que compite en D1, durante el programa de Junior College podrá potenciarse y mejorar con el objetivo de eventualmente ampliar sus posibilidades de ingresar a una institución más competitiva. Por otro lado, paralelamente se puede estudiar y obtener el diploma denominado Associate Degree a un costo mucho más accesible que el de una universidad de cuatro años.
¿Qué es el Associate Degree?
En el sistema educativo universitario estadounidense hay varios tipos de títulos que se pueden conseguir en orden una vez que se finaliza la secundaria: el Associate Degree, el cual se obtiene después de dos años de Junior College; el Bachelor’s Degree, que se alcanza después de cuatro años en una institución universitaria; el Master’s Degree y el Doctor’s Degree.
El Associate Degree se refiere, como se mencionó anteriormente, al título obtenido después de dos años de Junior College y fue implementado con el objetivo de poder desarrollar conocimientos técnicos y académicos que permitan a los estudiantes obtener un empleo o continuar sus estudios en el campo que elijan y en el que les gustaría crecer.

- AS (Associate of Science)
Los títulos de Associate Science, se alinean al campo de ciencias, tecnología, ingeniería, matemáticas y también negocios. En este programa se pueden estudiar cursos como: enfermería, higiene dental, control de tráfico aéreo, seguridad e ingresar al campo laboral en puestos como: técnico en farmacología, técnico de ingeniería, desarrollo de web, operaciones aeroespaciales, entre otros.
