Los estudiantes atletas que compiten en el deporte universitario de Estados Unidos no son atletas profesionales con contratos laborales que están ligados a organizaciones o clubes , esto quiere decir que el estudiante atleta puede hacer una transferencia de una universidad a otra en caso de que no esté cómodo o no le guste la universidad. La transferencia también ocurre en los casos en los que el estudiante atleta pierde la totalidad o una parte de la beca que la institución le estaba otorgando.
En muchos casos la transferencia es inevitable, estos son algunos casos hipotéticos en los que el estudiante atleta pueda encontrarse en la posición de “transfer” :
- Perdida de beca deportiva
- Perdida de beca académica
- Disconformidad con la institución
- Disconformidad con el lugar en donde esta ubicada la institución
- Disconformidad con el nivel deportivo del programa
Hacer una transferencia de universidad a otra es una situación muy delicada y el proceso puede llegar a ser más complicado que el proceso que se llevó a cabo para conseguir la beca en la universidad inicial.
Es iniciar de cero de nuevo. Iniciar otro proceso nuevo de adaptación. Un nuevo entrenador, un nuevo equipo y un nuevo sistema de juego.
En la parte académica, hay que tener claro que no todos los créditos van a ser convalidados en la nueva institución. Esto puede generar un retraso en la fecha de graduación y un desajuste con relación a los años restantes que tiene el estudiante atleta para competir. Inclusive, en algunos casos el estudiante atleta se pasa de universidad e ingresa a una carrera completamente distinta.
Además, hay que tomar en cuenta de que hay que buscar otra universidad que esté dispuesta a darle al estudiante atleta la cantidad de beca que se tiene en la universidad actual o la que se desea obtener.
Por más difícil que esté siendo, siempre hay que hacer todo lo posible y buscar algún tipo de solución a la situación para mantenerse en la universidad actual.
Si ya la situación es irreversible, el estudiante atleta debe de pedir comunicarle al encargado del programa deportivo su decisión. Posteriormente a eso, debe iniciar a buscar otra institución que se adecue a las necesidades que se tengan en ese determinado momento. Es importante resaltar que se debe de pedir la certificación de notas a la institución actual para enviarlas a su respectiva evaluación para poder hacer el proceso de convalidación con la próxima universidad.

Transferring to another university is a very delicate situation and the process can be more complicated than the process that was carried out to obtain the scholarship at the initial university.

On the academic side, it must be clear that not all credits will be validated at the new institution. No matter how difficult it may be, you should always do everything possible and look for some kind of solution to the situation in order to stay in the current university.
If the situation is already irreversible, the student-athlete should ask the person in charge of the athletic program to communicate his or her decision. After that, he/she should start looking for another institution that fits the needs that he/she has at that particular moment. It is important to emphasize that the certification of grades should be requested to the current institution to send them to their respective evaluation in order to make the process of validation with the next university.
