Los estudiantes-atletas están bajo constante presión no sólo para mantener un alto promedio de calificaciones, avanzar hacia un título o certificado, y además equilibrar un calendario de prácticas desafiantes cada semestre, sino que también se les desafía a sobresalir en su deporte. Los fanáticos de los gritos, los entrenadores exigentes y las aspiraciones de algún día ser atleta profesional, hacen que el estudiante atleta tenga un día a día para nada sencillo. Es por eso que las instituciones americanas reconoce a los más destacados.
Es por este esfuerzo que las diferentes instituciones, conferencias y entes reguladores de los deportes universitarios otorgan premios y reconocimientos a los estudiantes atletas más destacados.
Reconocimientos institucionales : Todas las instituciones otorgan premios diferentes pero los más comunes son:
- Mejor estudiante atleta del año para cada deporte en específico
- Mejor equipo del año para cada deporte en específico
- Premios para todo el equipo en caso de ganar la conferencia o algún campeonato
- Premio para el mejor programa deportivo de la institución
- Premio para el programa deportivo con mejor GPA (promedio de calificaciones)
- Premio para el mejor estudiante atleta de la institución
Reconocimientos de los entes reguladores : Existen diferentes entes reguladores en el deporte universitario, cada uno de ellos con sus distintas universidades. Estos entes son la NCAA, NAIA o NJCAA. Cada año, los entes reguladores otorgan premios para los competidores más destacados
- Premio para el mejor estudiante atleta del año para cada deporte en específico
- Premio para el mejor estudiante atleta del año (Premio Theodore Roosvelt)
- Premio para cada equipo ganador de conferencia
- Premio All America, se forma un “equipo” con los mejores estudiantes atletas de las distintas instituciones en el ámbito deportivo
- Premio Academic All America, se forma un “equipo” los mejores estudiantes atletas en el ámbito académico
Reconocimientos de las conferencias : En Estados Unidos, cada universidad compite en una conferencia, por ende existen una gran cantidad de conferencias a lo ancho de Estados Unidos. Las conferencias otorgan premios diferentes con respecto a cada deporte en específico pero los más comunes y generales son :
- Premio para el mejor estudiante atleta del año para cada deporte en específico
- Premio para cada equipo ganador de conferencia, esto incluye los famosos anillos de conferencia
- Premio All Conference, se forma un “equipo” con los mejores estudiantes atletas de las distintas instituciones en el ámbito deportivo

Student-athletes are under constant pressure not only to maintain a high grade point average, advance toward a degree or certificate, and balance a challenging internship program each semester, but they are also challenged to excel in their sport. Screaming fans, demanding coaches, and dreams of someday playing professionally can make some students feel pressured to put their sport at the forefront of their studies.
Because of this effort, institutions, conferences and university sports regulators give awards and recognition to the most outstanding student athletes.
Institutional awards : All institutions give different awards but the most common ones are :
