Las instituciones estadounidenses de educación superior ofrecen distintas ayudas económicas a estudiantes.
Beca atlética :
Las becas atléticas son ayudas económicas que otorgan las instituciones a estudiantes atletas con el objetivo de mejorar el rendimiento y competitividad de su programa deportivo.
Las instituciones otorgan un presupuesto de beca a cada programa deportivo para que por medio del equipo de trabajo, conocido como el staff deportivo, ofrezca becas deportivas a estudiantes atletas.
Es decir, el staff deportivo tiene total libertad para utilizar ese presupuesto como le plazca.
La clave se encuentra en entender que el estudiante atleta tiene que ser completamente merecedor de ese porcentaje de beca atlética. En pocas palabras, el nivel deportivo del estudiante atleta tiene que ir acorde a su porcentaje de beca atlética.
Hay que entender que cada institución tiene un presupuesto diferente, debido a que cada universidad tiene un costo diferente. Además de esto, también depende del ente regulatorio en el que compitan, debido a que cada ente permite a cada institución una determinada cantidad de becas atléticas por equipo, por ejemplo en división 1 de NCAA, cada programa deportivo de fútbol tiene 9.9 becas por equipo. Por ende, hay 9.9 becas atléticas para repartir entre todos los miembros del equipo.
Como dijimos anteriormente, la persona que tiene la potestad de manejar el presupuesto, puede repartir estas becas como le plazca. La mayoría de veces esta persona es el entrenador del programa. El entrenador puede ofrecer becas completas, donde el estudiante no tendría que pagar nada. Es un poco riesgoso utilizar beca completa en un solo atleta, pero los entrenadores las ofrecen si creen que este atleta tendrá un impacto positivo inmediato en el programa y mejorar el nivel competitivo.
Beca académica o merit based scholarship :
Todas las instituciones americanas otorgan becas académicas. Todas las instituciones americanas tienen procesos de admisión diferente y presupuestos distintos, por ende, cada una de estas instituciones otorga becas académicas diferentes.
¿Cómo se consiguen las becas académicas? Las becas académicas, como su mismo nombre lo dice, se consiguen por medio de buenas calificaciones académicas.

Como dijimos anteriormente, todas las instituciones son diferentes, por ende existen algunas instituciones que ofrecen becas académicas por una determinada nota en el toefl, otras que otorgan becas académicas por un GPA ( promedio ) alto en el colegio.
Al igual que las becas deportivas, las becas académicas pueden ser totales/completas o parciales. Entre mejor sea el promedio del colegio, las ntoas en los exámenes estandarizados, o en el caso de que el estudiante ingrese a la universidad en el país de residencia, las calificaciones de la universidad, mejores van a ser sus oportunidades.
Becas para internacionales
Las becas internacionales son ayudas económicas que pueden realizar algunas universidades a estudiantes foráneos. Todas las instituciones tienen programas de becas distintos, por ende estas becas internacionales no existen en muchas instituciones. De hecho, para poder beneficiarse de algún tipo de beca internacional hay que cumplir con los requisitos establecidos por la institución, es decir, no por el simple hecho de ser internacional ya voy a recibir la beca. Aunado a esto, hay que agregar que muchas universidades tienen estas becas internacionales destinadas a un país o región en específico.
Ayuda económica gubernamental: FAFSA
El gobierno de Estados Unidos ofrece ayuda económica a estudiantes americanos para que estos puedan ir a la universidad.
Para entender a fondo la ayuda económica que ofrece el gobierno de Estados Unidos hay que tener claro que es el FAFSA.
El FAFSA es una solicitud gratuita de ayuda federal para estudiantes. El FAFSA es un formulario que sirve para que el estudiante consiga ayuda económica por parte del gobierno.
Ayuda económica institucional :
Algunas instituciones ofrecen ayuda económica a estudiantes para que estos puedan ir a la universidad, estas ayudas son para estudiantes americanos e internacionales.
Para obtener esta ayuda económica, los estudiantes deben completar un formulario muy similar al FAFSA en donde se debe de incluir información de ingresos de los padres y así poder determinar el monto de ayuda.
No todas las universidades tienen estos programas de ayuda económica, normalmente son las universidades mas prestigiosas y con los presupuestos mas altos.
Las universidades de División 3 o IVY League que no tienen becas deportivas, normalmente tienen estos programas de ayudas económicas.

Athletic Scholarship :
Athletic scholarships are financial aid awarded by institutions to student athletes with the goal of improving the performance and competitiveness of their athletic program.
The institutions grant a scholarship budget to each athletic program so that through the work team, known as the athletic staff, they can offer athletic scholarships to student athletes.
In other words, the athletic staff has complete freedom to use that budget as it pleases.
The key is to understand that the student athlete has to be fully deserving of that athletic scholarship percentage. Simply put, the athletic level of the student athlete has to be commensurate with his or her athletic scholarship percentage.
It must be understood that each institution has a different budget, due to the fact that each university has a different cost. In addition to this, it also depends on the regulatory body in which they compete, because each body allows each institution a certain amount of athletic scholarships per team, for example in NCAA Division 1, each soccer program has 9.9 scholarships per team. Therefore, there are 9.9 athletic scholarships to distribute among all team members.
As we said earlier, the person who has the power to manage the budget can distribute these scholarships as he or she pleases. Most often this person is the coach of the program. The coach can offer full scholarships, where the student would not have to pay anything. It is a bit risky to use full scholarships on a single athlete, but coaches offer them if they believe this athlete will have an immediate positive impact on the program and improve the competitive level.
Academic or merit based scholarship:
All American institutions award academic scholarships. All American institutions have different admissions processes and different budgets, therefore, each of these institutions awards different academic scholarships.
How do I get an academic scholarship? Academic scholarships, as the name implies, are earned through good academic grades.

Like athletic scholarships, academic scholarships can be full or partial. The better the high school GPA, standardized test scores, or in the case of a student entering college in the country of residence, college grades, the better the chances.
International Scholarships
International scholarships are financial aid that some universities may offer to foreign students. All institutions have different scholarship programs, so international scholarships do not exist at many institutions. In fact, in order to benefit from some type of international scholarship, you must meet the requirements established by the institution, that is, just because you are an international student does not mean that you will receive a scholarship. In addition, many universities have international scholarships for a specific country or region.
Government Financial Aid: FAFSA
The U.S. government offers financial aid to American students so that they can go to college.
To fully understand the financial aid offered by the U.S. government, it is important to understand what the FAFSA is.
The FAFSA is a free application for federal student aid. The FAFSA is a form that helps students get financial aid from the government.
Institutional Financial Aid :
Some institutions offer financial aid to students to help them go to college for both U.S. and international students.
To obtain this financial aid, students must complete a form very similar to the FAFSA where they must include information about their parents’ income in order to determine the amount of aid.
Not all universities have these financial aid programs, usually the most prestigious universities with the highest budgets.
Division 3 or IVY League colleges that do not have athletic scholarships usually have these financial aid programs.
